Yes. You heard it right. Google is jumping into the virtual reality bandwagon by funding Magic Leap. “What company is this??” You might asked. At this point of time, little is known about Magic Leap. It is some sort like a mysterious company where it claims to provide a cinematic reality business. Rite now, Google led the investment and has raised around $542 million funding for this company. Now, it looks like the virtual reality industry getting stuffier and hotter when Google Inc. joins in.
More about Magic Leap…
Magic Leap is a company from Florida, US. From their website, they aims to use technology to bring back magic to the world such as fairies, elves, dragons and unicorns. From what I read, it sounds to me that Magic Leap is a kind of mixed reality company where it works with augmented reality, virtual reality and mobile computing as well. From its website, by using their “Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal“, they are able to generate images indistinguishable from real objects and then being able to place those images seamlessly into the real world. Well, it sounds to me like an advanced augmented reality or holographic technology.
According to its CEO, Rony Abovitz, this company will revolutionize the way people communicate, purchase, learn, share and play. Futhermore, they are working on the most natural and human-friendly wearable computing interface in the world. What an aspiration!
For your info, other companies which participate in this funding are Qualcomm, Obvious Ventures, Legendary Entertainment, Vulcan Capital and a few others. Even the Google’s SVP of Android, Chrome and Apps, will become one of Magic Leap’s board of directors. Co-founder of WETA, the special effects company behind “The Lord of The Rings”, is also on its board. What a strong backup and support that this company received.
So, how far this company can compete with other top VR company such as Oculus VR? I can’t wait to watch that happen. I want to see how this company can change the visual computing landscape. For more info, you can read it at:
