Recently, Samsung launched its new product which is Milk VR app or service. The purpose of this Milk VR app is to smoothly run the full-motion, 360-degree videos on its own Gear VR virtual reality headset. They plan to launch Gear VR Innovator’s Edition early this month where it will be perfectly compatible with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 which is their own product also. Seems like Samsung is trying to provide an end-to-end solution for virtual reality.

More about Milk VR 360-Degree Videos…

The great thing when you are watching or experiencing the 360-degree videos, you’ll be able to turn your head left, right, up and down and see what is around you. The video format will be .mp4s which can be standard monoscopic 360, stereoscopic 360 top/bottom or stereoscopic 360 left/right. Anyway, the best format for immersion will be full spherical 360. Example of the videos content in Milk VR are a Hong Kong flight over a city and waterfront view of Dubai.

The videos will likely be the reference or model for future content providers such as movie makers or artists who plan to venture into virtual reality medium. For your info, other “Milk” services are Milk Video and Milk Radio services. So, Milk VR will sit together with them as the new content channel. At this moment, it seems that the Milk VR service will offer the 360-degree videos through downloads and “adaptive streaming options”.

At this moment, they plan to provide the videos content for free in order to boost the public interest towards the virtual reality stuffs. They hope they can create the Milk VR experience as the “daily habit” for the consumers the same way as YouTube does where the users keep coming for more. Good move guys!! This is a strategic move by Samsung to be the lead of the virtual reality market since the smartphones revenue growth is slowing down plus with increasing competition in smartphones market.
