LIMERICK, Ireland – Limerick Greenway has set a new benchmark in immersive digital tourism by becoming the first greenway in Ireland to launch a full end-to-end virtual reality (VR) tour of its entire trail – a groundbreaking step that blends scenic exploration with cutting-edge technology.
The Limerick City and County Council-led initiative enables users to virtually traverse the complete 40 km Greenway, stretching from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale, passing through iconic stops such as Ardagh, Newcastle West and Templeglantine. Accessible on VR headsets, mobile devices and web platforms, the experience not only showcases Ireland’s lush landscapes but also broadens access to those who might be unable to experience it physically.
A Digital Journey Through Limerick’s Natural and Cultural Highlights
The immersive virtual tour vividly captures the Greenway’s natural beauty, historical heritage and engineering marvels. Highlights include the recently inaugurated €2.48 million Limerick Greenway Hub @ Rathkeale, the historic Ardagh Station House, Ferguson’s Viaduct, and the serene Tullig Wood.
Over an intensive eight-month period, experts from Global Virtual Asset Management (VAM) Ltd. collaborated with the Tourism Department of Limerick City and County Council to conduct detailed VR mapping and a 360-degree visual capture of not just the Greenway, but more than 20 top attractions across Limerick City and County. These include celebrated sites like King John’s Castle, the Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail, and the picturesque village of Adare.
Smart Tourism and Inclusive Access
At the launch event held at the Limerick IT Summit 2026 at the Dell Technologies Campus, Limerick’s Mayor John Moran described the project as a major leap forward for smart tourism and digital engagement. He emphasized that by merging the region’s unique landscape and heritage with immersive VR, Limerick is positioning itself on the global stage and making its cultural assets more accessible than ever.
The VR experience has been praised not just for its innovation but also for its inclusivity. It allows users worldwide – including those with mobility challenges – to explore the full trail and plan visits in advance, helping to level the playing field when it comes to tourism accessibility.
Looking Ahead: Global Events and Local Growth
Council leaders are optimistic about the role this initiative will play ahead of major global events, such as the Ryder Cup in Adare in 2027, which will draw increased international attention to the region. By enabling potential visitors to preview the Greenway digitally, the VR tour can inspire longer stays and deeper engagement with what Limerick has to offer.
Since its reopening in 2021 after a €10 million upgrade, Limerick Greenway has already attracted an estimated 1.5 million visitors from Ireland and abroad. With the addition of this VR tour, the region takes another forward-thinking step toward inclusive, technology-driven tourism that invites global audiences to explore remote landscapes from anywhere in the world.
