Nintendo’s Virtual Boy Classics Can Be Played on Labo VR Headsets

Nintendo’s Virtual Boy Classics Can Be Played on Labo VR Headsets

Nintendo has surprised retro gaming and virtual reality fans by confirming that classic Virtual Boy games will be playable using Nintendo Labo VR headsets. This unexpected compatibility gives new life to one of Nintendo’s most unusual consoles from the 1990s — this time through modern hardware.

Originally reported by GamesBeat, this update opens the door for players to experience Virtual Boy’s iconic stereoscopic 3D visuals without needing brand-new accessories.

A Comeback for Virtual Boy Games

Nintendo is launching Virtual Boy Classics as part of the Nintendo Classics lineup, available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack starting February 17, 2026.

At launch, players will be able to enjoy several well-known Virtual Boy titles, including Virtual Boy Wario Land and 3-D Tetris. Nintendo has also stated that more Virtual Boy titles will be added gradually throughout 2026 such as Zero Racer.

Labo VR as an Alternative Headset

Initially, Nintendo announced that Virtual Boy Classics would require a dedicated Virtual Boy viewing accessory, offered in two versions — a premium plastic model and a cheaper cardboard option.

However, Nintendo has since confirmed that Nintendo Labo VR headsets are fully compatible with Virtual Boy Classics. This means players who already own a Labo VR Kit can play these games without purchasing any additional hardware.

Interestingly, Nintendo has not heavily promoted this feature, likely because Labo VR kits are no longer officially sold. The compatibility was instead confirmed by Nintendo representatives during preview events.

What This Means for Players

If you still have a Nintendo Labo VR Kit, you can reuse it to experience Virtual Boy Classics on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 when the service launches.

This compatibility makes Labo VR feel relevant again, transforming it into a low-cost gateway for retro 3D gaming. While Labo VR does not match modern standalone VR headsets in terms of comfort or immersion, it delivers the core stereoscopic 3D effect that defined the original Virtual Boy experience.

Access to Virtual Boy Classics requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.

Retro 3D Meets Modern Nintendo

The original Virtual Boy was remembered for its bold ideas and controversial execution. Its red-and-black stereoscopic visuals were ahead of their time but limited by hardware constraints.

By bringing these games to modern Nintendo platforms — and quietly supporting Labo VR — Nintendo has found a clever way to preserve a unique piece of gaming history. For many players, this may be the first opportunity to experience Virtual Boy titles as they were originally intended.

Lastly…

For the retro enthusiasts and VR-curious gamers alike, this move highlights Nintendo’s ongoing interest in blending nostalgia with modern technology.
