Razer introduces OSVR Hacker Dev Kit, the Open-Source VR Gaming Headset

Recently, Razer, a gaming peripheral company, introduced OSVR Hacker Dev Kit, an open-source VR gaming headset during CES. They target to release it to public on June 2015. The price of the Razer’s OSVR Hacker Dev Kit will be around US$200 ($199.99 to be precise).

OSVR stands for ‘Open Source Virtual Reality’. It is a new group to promote interoperability around virtual reality gaming industry and ecosystem. It is also an ecosystem to set up an open standard for Virtual Reality input devices, games and output to provide the best gaming experience in virtual reality environment. OSVR is led by Razer and suported by VR hardware and software leaders like Sensics, Sixense, Leapmotion, Nod, Unity, Unreal, Intel, Bosch and Gearbox Software.

Since Razer is part of the OSVR members, it shown its support by producing the OSVR Hacker Dev Kit which is a virtual reality device and open-source software that enables programming for any type of VR technology. The headset will work best with software written for Unity 3D or Unreal 4 Engine.

On the hardware specs, it has a 1920 x 1080 screen and offers a 100-degree field of view. It got the basic sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. It optics also used two elements for lower distortions and it also lets you adjust each eye’s focus and interpupillary distance independently.

The good thing about this stuff is that it is an open-source platform. Meaning to say, if you are not willing to spend your $200 to buy the OSVR headset, then you can build it yourself. Razer allows you to download the schematics and 3D files for free since it is an open-source. In this way, you can print, build and customize your own VR goggles. Razer OSVR Virtual Reality Gaming Headset

Although it looks similiar like Oculus Rift, but it does not intend to be their competitor. According to Razer’s CEO, Min-Liang Tan, OSVR is designed to complement the Rift developer kit as part of a new open-source VR initiative or movement.
