Shark lovers and VR enthusiasts have a new reason to dive beneath the waves. SharKarma: Guardian of the Oceans is a pioneering virtual reality experience that lets users feel like they are truly swimming with sharks — not just watching them on a screen.
What SharKarma is About?
SharKarma is a cinematic short-film where the story follows Dr. Karam Mana and his eclectic crew as their ocean expedition plunges into a chilling confrontation with nature’s ultimate enforcer, an ancient guardian shark, which is awakened by ecological disruption and human interference.
This project, developed by a team of technologists, filmmakers, and lifelong Jaws fans, was built with one ambitious goal in mind: to let audiences live inside a shark story rather than simply observe it.
SharKarma’s Behind the Scene
Crucially, Sharkarma is not just about thrilling encounters. The team collaborated with WildAid and ocean advocate Wendy Benchley, co-founder of the Peter Benchley Ocean Awards and a former Jaws actress, to bring a conservation message to the experience. This partnership ties the immersive story to real-world efforts to protect sharks and ocean ecosystems — a meaningful connection for both fans and newcomers alike.
Unlike traditional films, Sharkarma uses advanced volumetric VR technology with six degrees of freedom (6DoF), meaning viewers can move naturally around the environment and feel surrounded by the ocean. This level of immersion allows you to explore underwater landscapes, witness dramatic moments firsthand, and come face-to-face with sharks in a way that standard flat video can’t replicate.
One of the big technical challenges for the creators was making the experience both immersive and comfortable. Motion sickness is a well-known issue in virtual reality, particularly in experiences involving fast movement or realistic environments. The production team worked closely with V-Nova Studios to use their PresenZ technology, which delivers cinematic depth and natural movement while minimizing discomfort. The result is a VR experience that feels like being inside a high-quality film without the common physical drawbacks.
Lastly…
For Jaws fans and newcomers alike, Sharkarma is more than just another VR release — it is a historic moment in cinematic virtual reality. Whether you once feared the ocean after watching Jaws or simply love marine life, this experience invites you back under the waves in 2026 to see sharks in a whole new light.
The experience is now available via ImmersiX on Steam VR, marking a new frontier for how stories can be told and experienced through virtual reality.
