Vinnytsia, a city in western Ukraine, has unveiled two innovative virtual 3D eco-route experiences that allow users to explore natural landscapes, cultural sites, and local ecosystems from anywhere — including through virtual reality. Developed with the support of local authorities and the VR studio Travelbox VR, these new routes combine panoramic photography, audio guides, and interactive navigation to bring outdoor tourism online.
The Virtual Routes…
The first route, known as the Kotsiubynsky Trail, winds approximately 6 km through the scenic Sabary Forest. This trail incorporates eight informational boards, each equipped with QR codes linking to online maps and extended content on local flora, fauna, hydrology, topography, and historical context. The tour also commemorates the year dedicated to the celebrated Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the landscapes that influenced his life and work.
The second route, titled “Between Three Bridges”, follows the embankment of the Southern Bug River, covering the area between Kyiv, Central, and Old City Bridges. This eco-tour highlights a rich variety of wildlife — from marsh turtles and herons to otters and blue-necked birds — while also introducing users to lesser-known local landmarks such as Kemp’s Island and Vinnytsia’s first water-pumping station.
Both new eco-routes feature 17 high-resolution 360° spherical panoramas — up to 130 megapixels — with smooth interactive transitions between them. Guided narration accompanies each virtual walk, helping users better understand the ecology, biodiversity, and historical landmarks of the Vinnytsia region.
The Aims…
According to Svitlana Tsyhankova, Director of the Marketing Department for Tourism at Vinnytsia City Council, the project aims to promote ecological awareness and cultural tourism, engaging both residents and visitors in preserving the environment while providing access to natural routes for those unable to walk them in person.
Lastly…
These virtual tours signal a growing trend where VR and interactive 3D technology are used to make outdoor and ecological experiences accessible to broader audiences, blending tourism, technology, and environmental education.
