Recently, Samsung has announced its latest product called “Gear VR” which is a wireless and mobile virtual reality headset. This VR headset is designed to work together with the upcoming Samsung Note 4. You just snap, slip or dock the Samsung Note 4 into the headset and you will be immediately transported into the cinematic virtual reality environment. This is an awesome news for me and will be a good reason for me to upgrade from my current Note 2. Hopefully soon, we can see a new virtual reality phenomenon at Samsung store where everybody will be busy trying out this cool stuff. Below is how it looks like…

More about Samsung Gear VR…
The first release of this Gear VR is called Innovator Edition where it is an early access, beta version. It is designed for developers and hardcore VR fans or enthusiasts that want to try out before the company release it to the mass market. Samsung Note 4 will have a sharper display of a 5.7-inch (or 143.9-mm) Quad HD Super AMOLED (2560×1440) display. When used together with the headset, it will provide a virtual reality experience to the users. It will allow users to have a cinematic experience like watching the video as if they were in a theatre. Besides, you also have the option to feel like be on-stage of a performance with full 360 degree 3D video.
For your info, this Samsung Gear VR is actually a collaboration between Samsung and Oculus VR. As you already know, Oculus VR is the creator of Oculus Rift. Its CTO, John Carmack, is always looking for ways to use the normal consumer mobile device as the virtual reality platform. Hence in this deep technical partnership, Oculus VR contributed on their know-how and technical knowledge, tweaking the software to reduce the latency and help choosing the lenses for this headset. The headset powered by Oculus is using the Oculus Mobile SDK together with variations of Oculus Tracker and firmware built into it. This will enable the headset to have extremely accurate, ultra low-latency 3DOF tracking.

I think that it is now a trend for the manufacturer to produce a so-called “dummy-but-sophisticated” headset that is capable to turn your mobile phone into a VR HMD (Head-Mounted Display). This kind of trend will surely increase the adoption rate of virtual reality technology to the mass market. For more info, you can read it at:
