What is Varjo XR-3?
Varjo XR-3 is a mixed reality (MR) headset from Varjo. It was first launched in December 2020 and started its shipping in first quarter 2021. Varjo positioned this headset as the true mixed reality headset.

What is the Display Resolution of Varjo XR-3?
The focus strength of this headset is on its great display with human eye resolution. Varjo XR-3 has high resolution specs which is over 70 PPD (Pixels-Per-Degree). Furthermore, it also has a very wide 115-degree FOV (Field of View).
To produce realistic scenes, the color gamut matches 99% with sRGB and 93% with DCI-P3 color space. It also has 12-megapixel video pass-through or video stream.
With LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) feature and stereo RGB video feed, this headset able to achieve depth awareness for the pixel-perfect real-time occlusion. This can help a lot during 3D world reconstruction for example building the realistic environments of your surroundings.

This headset also has automatic IPD and 90 Hz frame rate. It also uses crystal clear non-Fresnel lenses. This can help you to work longer in virtual environment without having eye strain or simulator sickness.

How About Its Sensor & Tracking?
Varjo XR-3 has integrated Ultraleap hand tracking where they use the Ultraleap Gemini version 5 (v5). It also has an ultra-low latency which is less than 20 ms.
On the Eye Tracking, this headset is using the integrated 200 Hz eye tracking system with sub-degree accuracy plus 1-dot calibration for foveated rendering. To simplify, the headset will show what the user is directly looking at in full resolution.
That is quite similar how the human eye works. Wonderful, isn’t it? With this kind of capability, the eye tracking data can be used for more sophisticated training analysis or research purposes.
For the Positional Tracking, you can use SteamVR 2.0 or 1.0 tracking system. It is recommended to use the 2.0 version. Hence, if you choose this, then you need the 2.0 base stations.
To make things more excited, this headset also comes together with Inside-Out tracking feature (beta) which will make the deployments become much easier without the need for base stations.

Is Varjo XR-3 a Stand-Alone VR Headset?
This is a PC VR headset system. Meaning to say, you must have a Varjo-Ready Computers or PC to make it works with the headset. Just to add, this headset is compatible with the Windows 10 and 11 desktop computers.
Since it is not a standalone VR headset, the strength of the processors, CPU, GPU, RAM and storage is dependent on the PC VR specification. The minimum requirement or specs of the PC that you should have are:
- Processor with 8-core CPU
- Memory of 32 GB
- Storage space of 2 GB
- Windows 10 (64-bit) Operating System
- GPU either NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000.

What is Varjo XR-3 Focal Edition?
This is a special variant of Varjo XR-3 where the focus is for advanced MR use cases which can be considered as mission-critical. It offers better visual precision when the need arises for close up view such as to visualize small text and illustrations on physical instruments. It will be beneficial for places such as plane cockpits, car dashboards, cell phones, kneeboards, crucial dials, knobs and many more.
This mixed reality camera system in Focal Edition has been calibrated to provide enhanced and improved image clarity than the standard XR-3. The improved image clarity is in the 30 cm to 80 cm range.

Furthermore, Varjo XR-3 Focal Edition also put a lot of emphasize on the security and privacy aspect as well. This will be very useful in the highly classified environments such as military, defense, intelligence, national service and critical infrastructure. So, that’s also the reason this version is fully TAA/BAA-compliant (the Trade Agreements Act and the Buy America Act).
What Else with Varjo XR-3?
This Varjo headset are compatible with professional 3D platforms and software such as Unity, Unreal Engine, OpenXR 1.0, Autodesk VRED, PREPAR3D and VBS Blue IG.
